There's only one or two people who haven't seen this yet, so I think it's safe enough to post now!

After not having one or a few years now, I decided this year to make Christmas cards. I always seem to be so busy come November, and this year was no different, so I didn't have the time I would have liked to illustrate a card. I decided to go with a two colour block printed card to save a little time. I cut the designs out of a couple different softoleum blocks, and used THIS Speedball press to print a bajillion copies. Then I personalized each card with a message inside, practising my calligraphy skillz.

Then I couldn't find envelopes I liked enough that weren't stupid expensive, or online and wouldn't arrive in time. So I found some really giant sheets of paper at my favourite local art supply. I modified a template of another envelope I had, and cut them all out myself with an exacto knife. Then I address each one all fancy and mailed them out in small batches.

I'm hoping to do things like this more often. I do really love sending and receiving good old fashioned snail mail. I'm also growing much more confidant with calligraphy and hand lettering script, which is very good since I plan on addressing all my invitations (for the wedding) myself. Who knows, if I'm good at it, maybe I'll look into doing that sort of thing on commission!

Sorry for the lack of updates, I've been hard at work on my book, which I am keeping pretty secret until there's more to show. Here's two small sneak peeks, though.

I'll try to keep popping in as I work, mainly just so that I don't go insane. I'll be buckling down for the next few weeks, and probably not getting out very much. Not that I want to get out much, the weather here has turned nasty and cold and snowy. Much more the typical January I remember from my youth than it has been so far.

Well I hope everyone's holidays were TIP TOP! I had some pretty good times after a very up and down year. I did manage to score a very nice new pocket-sized digital camera (thanks mom!), which for you means many more process shots, and maybe a few more of the cat. 2012 is going to be the YEAR OF THE BLOG! It's about time I put some more blood, sweat, and tears into my online presence. That should be beginning with some serious design overhauls. I've said that before, but this time I promise it's TRUE!

On a more interesting and concrete note, here's the first page of a comic I did for The Big Feminist But anthology. Probably some of my best work to date, I put a lot of time and effort into my 4 pages. Specifically in the layouts and backgrounds. I didn't write it though, so if you want to see the rest, and get to read it too, I guess you'd better stay tuned and I'll let you know when and where you can buy it!

Hey there Sports Fans!
I've got a big post coming up soon that should get you all riled up (fingers crossed) with some new material! But until then, here's a little goodie to tide you over.

Sometime around this time last year, I did some sample work on a story for :01. Sadly my art didn't make the cut, a little too extreme perhaps? I'm glad I got to do it though, I learned so much, busted my ass to meet deadlines, and had to draw things WAAAY out of my comfort zone. Click on the below image to see a real big picture of three sample pages (sans text, sorry dudes, I didn't write it).

It went back forth a bit, I got more information about how the editor and author(s) envisioned the main character, and drew this ast test page based on their suggestions. This page you will have seen before if you follow my blog. The girl with pigtails is the same girl from the above pages, a little dirtier, a little grimier, and modeled after my old roomie.

Designing the characters for this one was the most fun I've had in a while! I like to model characters roughly after people I know, or people I've sketched while staring out the window of a café. Also the one with the wine bottle looks just like my mom did in her 20's, completely coincidental!

This whole project really helped me consider elements I didn't previously bother with in my own work, I feel like I grew a lot as a cartoonist. What's really important to me is the vague idea you get of plot without being able to read the dialogue. Good comics have strong visual storytelling, and this is something I hope to improve even further on in the future.

Or at least, that's what it feels like I'm doing. Sorry for the long absence, blog followers, but it will all soon make sense.

First off, I'm getting back to work after a bit of a hiatus. I'm sure you know how difficult that is, getting back into the swing of things is difficult, and I have so many things to do that I'm suffering from acute attention deficit issues, and when I can't concentrate on any ONE thing, sometimes I end up doing nothing at all instead. Here are what my thumbnails look like for the next series of Pig Boy comics. Finally you will know the whole Pig Boy story, as I'm sure you've been dying to learn. I have also already finished inking one of the stories. Though don't get too proud of me, each installment is only about 5 pages. Don't remember Pig Boy? You should click here then.

The reason for my recent hiatus was a tragedy that struck my boyfriend's (and therefor MY) family. His brother's wife had problems during her labour and sadly my little nephew was deprived of oxygen for too long, and was born with massive brain damage. He lived for two very wonderfully happy and horribly sad days before he was taken off life support. I think I can easily say those days and the few that followed were the most difficult of my life. I still can't imagine how little George Zimerman-Read's parents are coping at all. The bright side (because there always is one) is that I got to see a family pull so close together, and I was allowed to be part of it. I consider little George (or Kimchi, as he was called in the womb before we knew his gender and he very closely resembled a pickled cabbage) as my nephew, and Aviv's brother's and sisters-in law as mine too, after experiencing such a heartbreaking ordeal together. I wanted to post a photo of him, but it makes me too sad. I dropped off a package of cookies along with the card pictured below, to the nurses in the NICU at Sick Kids' Hospital. They were amazing people, I don't think I could thank them enough for the support they gave us while we camped out at the hospital.

I'm looking forward to the day when looking at the baby products we carry at work, or going into a toy store, or looking at new babies and preggo ladies doesn't make me sad.

I painted myself a moustache for Movember. I was facepainting for an event, and thought it was topical and funny. A little girl asked me if I was pretending to be a boy. I modeled this marvelous thing after my boyfriend's. When he doesn't wax it into curls, it's pretty wild, lookit all those little stray hairs!

Been hard at work the last few days on this for Toronto draws. Aside from that I've been working on my book and printed another short story from it for Canzine. I'll be posting it soon for you to read..I think... Actually I haven't decided yet, don't quote me on anything. If there's enough interest, I might soon reprint a few comics that aren't yet available online. Those being: The Ridiculous Adventures of A. Zimerman, Orphans, and Buttsex. The other comics I'll be retiring forever, very soon. I'll try to make some of them available to buy online soon, but some are already sold out and I have no plans to print more.

One of these days I'll get the hang of blogging, I promise (says the girl who's had a blog for somewhere around 10 years). I've been attempting to work lately, but I'm sure you guys know how life is. It really does take sadistic pleasure in getting in the way.

I also baked some cookies, and yes, the lovely Anne Koyama pointed out (not in so many words) that I'm mentally challenged and spelled Conundrum incorrectly.

These two images are the front and back covers of the mini i'm desperately trying to pull together for CANZINE (yay) this weekend. So far it looks pretty grim dudes, but I'll try to keep you posted. If not, you can find these little hoboes in my book which you won't be able to find any information about on Conundrum's website, because I haven't given them any. Tell life to move the fuck on and let me be a hermit like I've always wanted to be since I saw that Muppet Babies movie and kermit runs away to become a hermit and wears monks robes and lives in a cave. I already live in a concrete cave, now I just need robes and some green paint.

Hey dudes and dudettes! I have a question to pose to the internet! Everytime I do this, the internet always comes to my aid, so here goes.

My dear old point and shoot Canon Powershot A700 from a million years ago that I remember paying an exorbitant sum for, is hiccuping. Bad. It seems to think all the batteries I give it are dead (though they are fresh as daisies) and loves to just turn itself off after one or two shots. I think it is time to finally lay my baby to rest, and so I ask this: People of the internet, what is a good point and shoot camera that won't break my bank, but that also gives me a few manual functions? What is your favourite? I have no interest in something complicated, been there, done that, I want to record my life in a simple way. If I ever need fancy photos, I have an entire family of photographers to fall back on.

I can and have done some research myself, but reviews on websites are only so good, and star ratings are often misleading. I used to work in a camera store, but it's been a long time, and I no longer have my thumb on the pulse of the industry.

Also, I would like it to be red. That is all.

Hey there sports fans! (didja like my carebears reference there? huh?)
I've been trying a bunch of different techniques for the final look of a new comic I'm working on. The regular old brush inking was getting boring, but I was getting very frustrated knowing what I WANTED, and not being able to achieve the look. I'm sure all my fellow illustrators and cartoonists know what I'm talking about. Anyway, I think I've almost hit it here, good enough for government work (as my dad would say). I'll keep at it for the next few projects and see if I can't nail the look I'm going for, and if not, well then maybe I'll come up with something else!

In other news, I'm thinking about finding an intern for a few hours a week to do all the stuff I don't want to do, and hang out with me and Panties (the cat). If you are, or know anyone interested in doing things like scanning and colour correcting. When convention time rolls around, photocopying and stapling, and being rewarded only with cat snuggles and coffee, drop me a line at britt@brittwilson.com. Little Island Comics just opened Sept 6th! The awesomest cutest little comic shop for kids. And me. I painted the logo (designed by the very talented Steve Manale) on the storefront window temporarily until their own (probably also awesome) sign shows up.

Back to the old grind! I'm so busy I can barely THINK! Hopefully I'll have some fun new things to share with you soon! Also, while I'm here, I have a request! I'm finding that all I read lately is written for 12 year olds, or is George R.R. Martin. I have a hankerin' for some good old fashioned adult literature, and though I work in a bookstore, I have no idea what to read. ALSO I don't have time for actual readin', audiobooks are my poison of choice recently. Anyone have any good books with easily found audiobook components?

Well, inevitably Captain America had to come down. I must say it was more fun than it should have been to peel the paint off the window. My fingers got very pruny. Wish I had a better camera, but of course my batteries are dead, as usual, so iphone shots it is!

The new one! I got into what I call "work mode" and forgot to take process photos for you. The reflections are a big pain in the butt, there's a lot of detail there that is very difficult to capture, like the logos on the inside board, and that arrow says "Friends of Savers". The company this month is Longboard Living. The café is selling a bunch of boards and other merch, if yer in the hood you should check it out!

Aviv and I have an addiction called "Way too many cigar boxes" and we just got our grubby hands on more!

Oh hey guys, fancy meeting you here! Well, since you're here, I might as well tell you AAAALLL about the things I've been up to this week!

It AAAAAAALLL started with this guy I made for indigo, and boy, was it a learning experience!

If you click on this little montage you'll go to a set with all images in it, so you can, like, see them all big and stuff. I'm sorry my stinky ex-roomate is in there, she insisted on visiting me, and keeping me company for the last leg of my 7am - 5pm shift.

Harry potter and Voldemort are long gone now, but because they were SO AWESOME, *wink wink* I got a lovely email from Josette at ING direct, who wanted the same treatment for her windows! They do something pretty awesome over there at ING, where they partner up with a local company and sell some merch at their café on Yonge and Shuter. The proceeds from said sales then go to a local charity. They were also holding a Kids Week full of fun activities for those little trolls that live in your houses. To help drum up sales and gawkers and bored people and the like, I did a little something like THIS:

What bothers me more than my lack of posting, is that funny spot at the bottom of that picture... looks like it might be time to look into a new camera...sigh. Well, like I said, it's been over a month since I last popped by. Here's a peek at something I'm workin' on. Not necessarily secret, but not really...not a secret either. Every time I pick up a paintbrush I realize how much I miss painting, even though I love comics dearly, I never get to use colour and physical paints when doing them.

The last few days have been annoying, Vicki and I have had zero power for a day, and 1/2 power for two. Luckily this morning I woke up at 5 am to the bathroom light illuminating the hallway and my nose didn't hurt from the cold anymore!

Last night after they kicked us out of Starfucks (official name, I swear) and we had to go home to the dark, we decided to take matters into our own hands, and create a little olden-days studio in our kitchen. Then I remembered we had LED lights and batteries kicking around, so we taped them with packing tape to various objects until we got it right.

Also I painted on a little wiener-hat for one of my various bosses. He rides a bike and wears this under his helmet. That's what he SAYS anyway. All I know is, it transforms anyone who wears it into the biggest wiener.

Something i've been slaving over all afternoon, stretching my Adobe Illustrator legs and designing a business card for a friend of mine at the same time. So far I have no idea what I'm doing, and it's been frustrating because of my insufficient planning, due to my insufficient skills. But it's chugging along slowly and getting easier as I go. Updates as things continue.

This darling sweet thing is the first installment of a series of type exercises I'm doing to get better at hand drawn type. And also because I love to draw letters so much. And also because I enjoy writing stupid little love notes to my boyfriend and depositing them on his person or amongst his stuff and waiting for him to find them. Don't judge me.

Hey dudes, it's that time of year again! The time when I go ARGH! and pull out my hair because I forgot it was that time of year. No, that is lies, this time I am much more prepared, I did not print my comics two days before and assemble them the night before. FOLKS, CANZINE is upon us, and I have MINI COMICS. No new ones, sadly I couldn't get my ass together in time for new comics. But I have old ones printed differently, which is almost like new! oooh, and cute little signs.

In other news, I was in that monsterbation show at the pony club, and now all the paintings at the show are also on sale on ETSY! I think you should buy my piece so I don't have to find somewhere to store it.

Also, my pieces for the Steamwhistle show are up until next friday, if you live in Toronto, please check it out. And buy those too for the same reason as you should buy the other one.

A little simpler, but I am running out of time, and my wrist needs a break. This is the last one, no time for more, now I'm in the business of framing and prepping for the show. There is a personal element to this piece: when I was a wee lass my dad told me that sharks lived in the sewer. Now this really didn't bother me, but for some reason my retarded infant mind decided that sharks eat rocks, and so I would sit at the foot of our driveway throwing pebbles into the storm drain, thinking I was feeding them. Always hoping for a glimpse.

Somewhere in my house there is photo evidence, my friends, and it is hopefully staying buried.

Still working hard, though my progress on this new piece was halted this afternoon when I found out an old boss of mine from when I worked at the Chapters in Brampton, Guy Everingham, just passed away. I won't lie to you, oh Blogosphere, I'm pretty broken up about it. He was a really sweet man who bought all my mini-comics from me, even though he has no interest in comics whatsoever. He did, however, have a wickedly sharp sense of humour mixed with the driest of wit. It's very difficult to have a loved one taken from you so suddenly and without warning. I know I'll miss him terribly and I can only wish his family the best.

In other news, Vicki and I have been doing our best to keep up with...everything.

For Anne Koyama, of Koyama Press, the hippest, nicest, most determined lady I ever did meet.

This was a labour intensive project. Planning out a tileable pattern and then painting it by hand. There are some spots that ended up overlapping by stupid mistakes made on my part, but I'm pretty pleased with the result. It's been too long since I painted, this whole process was speckled with swearing and cursing and near tears hysteria. Apparently it's not like riding a bicycle.

I mailed all but TWO of the commissions. One because I have no address, and one because it is new, and I haven't drawn it yet. So there you go, if you're waiting on a commission from me still, chances are it's on a truck, RIGHT NOW. Commissions are officially closed, but I'm always checking my email, and if I found a message from YOU in there, detailing a request, I'm sure I would respond in the positive and tell you where to send the appropriate monies.

In other news, I have some awesome photos from new york that I keep meaning to post, but I haven't. Maybe I'll get around to it, who knows?!

Well guys, it's about time I tell you about TCAF (aka the best comics fest ever) (I am told, as I don't go to many).

I took one photo the entire time, here it is:

I think Dustin Harbin is doing something really mean and nasty and/or disgusting to Kate Beaton. And yes. Dustin is wearing a shirt with his own face on it. He is THAT guy.

TCAF was great. I got drunk a lot, except for one night when everyone else went Karaoke-ing and I stayed in to finish THESE:

They are a promo for a Viking Reader being published by the Univerity of Toronto Press. They asked for "cute" to offset the violence. I'm pretty sure I got it.

In other news, we caught a mouse in our stove! Well, we didn't like, catch him in our hands, I mean more like we caught him red handed. In the cookie jar, so to speak...except it was the stove. There was defecation involved, OURS OR HIS? you will never know. THE RESULT:

I cleaned all the pots and pans that were stored under the stove in the bathtub, while Vicki sees the mouse and shrieks like a girl.

She is mad because I told you she shrieked like a girl. Did I mention she did it twice?

We pulled apart the kitchen. It is only now (two days later) almost all back together. We are too afraid to clean behind the stove, BUT IT MUST BE DONE.

Hello hello my little sheepies!

I'm sorry for how stagnant the pool that is my blog (haha, blog...stagnant....b[l]og BOG get it? hhahahehehahehhehhhghhehhee) has gotten lately. I'm very busy with freelance and a day job, and I'm still learning how to handle it, and properly manage my time. Mainly I'm popping in just to remind y'all to stop by the Toronto Reference Library THIS WEEKEND for TCAF (Toronto Comic Arts Festival) and creep around my table touching your sweaty fingertips to the crisp white paper that makes up my handcrafted mini-comics! Oh, and of course those of my roommate and associate and co-conspirator and platonic life-partner Vicki Nerino

Phil McAndrew and Ryan Pequasteroid will be bunking with us. I guess that means I should take that dirty pair of underpants that's hanging off the corner of the mantle and put them in the laundry basket...

I am showing you my first batch of commissions! They have been mailed out, and I think most have been received. If I am spoiling the surprise I apologize (but only a little).

I somehow forgot to scan this. OR as I suspect is more likely I saved it somewhere stupid and will never find the file again. Another one is also missing, but I don't even have a stupid photobooth picture of it. It involved a wonderful lady riding a cat. You would have loved it.

This one probably hasn't arrived yet, and I am worried that this is not what he wanted at all and yet at the same time, whatever. When you ask me for Cruella and puppies, this is what you get. Moral of the day: Be specific.

For those lucky few of you who HAVE given me money for a commission and are like, hey, where's my art you whore? Well I am here to tell you that almost ALL of them are done and sitting in envelopes in my front hall, waiting for me to get my ass to the post office. I'M SORRY it's taken me so long! When I started taking them on, I had nothing better to do, and about 3 days later I was inundated with so many not better but more pressing things, so it's taking me much longer than expected. You should know that you paid my rent though, so keep your pants on, and keep checking your mail boxes.

On the comics front, I'm reprinting pretty much everything for TCAF. I'm all comicked out. This is the new cover for Pig Boy #1.

This is a gift for a friend. I spent the last forever fighting with Vicki's scanner, and this is still so awful, BUT it is less awful than some of the previous scans. Anyone recommend a good cheap scanner? One day when I am not living hand to mouth, I will kick this one to the curb.

Sorry, no drawings, I've been slacking. Actually I've just been out and about all over the place. The last three days have been REALLY hectic.

If we're friends at all, you probably know I stupidly managed to get my bike stolen last week. I have no photos of it as far as I know, it was useful, but it was dreadful ugly and uncomfortable. This new one on the other hand, is SWEET! So sweet I had to drape myself all over it in unflattering ways in order to fully describe my love.

I was a bit torn between the name Hermes or Charon, but in the end Hermes just SOUNDS better.

Thanks to my cousin for helping me pick out this baby from his shop in Caledon, and for giving me a great deal too. And for not making too much fun of me when I couldn't make it back up the hill.

p.s. I found those stickers on the spokes and stuck them to my nipples. I don't know why, it seemed like the thing to do at the time
